Some important new rules for students are:
- As of January 2024, the Canadian government announced a two-year cap on Canadian study visas. However, some students are not limited by this cap(K-12, master’s degree, doctoral degree students).
- Study permits will be given out based on how many people live in each province or region.
- Students who go to public-private partnership (PPP) schools will not be able to apply for post-graduation work permits (PGWPs) after they graduate starting September 1, 2024.
- Students who aren’t exempt from the cap must include a provincial attestation letter (PAL) with their study pass application starting January 22, 2024.
- Soon, open work permits will only be given to the spouses or common-law partners of foreign students in master’s and doctoral programs, as well as to students in professional programs like law and medicine.
